Hall 5 · Portraits
The sitters
Twenty-two portraits in oil. No sitter has been identified. No artist has been
identified. The Institute has, however, identified the gazes, in the sense that it knows where
each of them is directed, at all times, which is at whoever is in the hall.

describing it as a fault.
CONSERVATION
Portrait 14 was cleaned in 1968. Cleaning revealed a second figure behind the sitter.
Portrait 14 was cleaned again in 1969, in the hope of resolving the second figure.
Cleaning revealed a third. The Institute has not cleaned Portrait 14 since,
and asks that visitors do not stand in front of it for extended periods.
