By loading this page you have accepted these terms. By not loading it you would also have
accepted them, in a manner the Institute finds harder to document but no less binding.
CLAUSE 1 Presence
You are inside the Institute. This was true before you navigated here and will remain true after you close the tab, in a diminished but persistent form.
The Institute makes no claim on your attention, your data, or your person. It does keep a count. The count is stored on your own device. It is not transmitted. It is not sold. There is nobody to sell it to.
You are being recorded in the sense that a room remembers being walked through. No footage exists. No footage has ever existed. The recording is a feeling.
CLAUSE 2 Movement
You may enter any wing. You may not enter Wing VI, on the grounds that nobody has established where it is, not on the grounds that it is prohibited.
The elevator will accept any button. It will not necessarily go there.
Sub-Level B is not part of the Institute. Sub-Level B is underneath the Institute. These are different statements and the difference is load-bearing.
CLAUSE 3 The Collection
Do not feed the collection. The collection does not eat. This clause exists because it had to be added.
Items in the collection that appear to be watching you are, in every case examined, watching you. This is a property of the items and not a malfunction.
Any item you bring in becomes part of the collection. This includes thoughts, which is why the Reading Room is kept cold.
CLAUSE 4 Comfort
CALM MODE is available at all times from the corner of every room, or by pressing C. It stops all motion, all sound and all surprises immediately and permanently until switched off. It is not a trick. It is the only thing in this building that is not a trick.
Nothing here will open a window, download a file, play audio without you touching something first, or prevent you from leaving.
If you are unwell, leave. The Institute will still be here. That is the one promise it can actually keep.
CLAUSE 5 Termination
These terms cannot be terminated by you.
These terms cannot be terminated by the Institute.
These terms were found already written, in the building, before the building.
Do you accept?(You already did. This is ceremonial.)
